Portable Dam System Flash Floods

Project Overview

We were approached to design a portable, modular dam system intended for quick deployment during flash flood events in urban and semi-rural environments. The system had to be lightweight, easy to transport, and deployable by two people within minutes, while withstanding high volumes of fast-moving water. This was a high-impact project that combined structural engineering, materials optimization, and real-world disaster response insight to deliver a product that could save property, infrastructure, and lives.

Key Design Features

Modular Interlocking Units
Each unit connects without tools, forming seamless barriers that scale in length depending on the threat area.

Self-Stabilizing Base Geometry
Designed to use the weight of rising floodwater to anchor the dam more firmly — eliminating the need for ground penetration.

Foldable & Stackable Frame
Compact flat-pack design with hinged panels for efficient storage in municipal emergency vehicles or warehouses.

High-Durability Material Selection
Constructed from UV-stabilized, chemical-resistant HDPE and reinforced aluminium framing for both strength and corrosion resistance.

Integrated Drainage & Overflow Channel
Engineered relief path prevents overtopping and redirects excess water away from critical zones.

Engineering Process

We began with hydrodynamic simulation studies to assess impact resistance and overtopping behaviour, followed by FEA-based structural analysis for load-bearing and lateral pressure under worst-case scenarios.
Field prototypes were tested under controlled flash flood simulations to validate joint locking stability, leak prevention, and structural flexibility on uneven terrain.

Outcome

The final system was delivered as a field-ready, scalable flood defence solution, currently being piloted by emergency response units in flood-prone regions. This project highlights our team’s ability to engineer deployable, real-world solutions that meet the demands of disaster resilience and environmental engineering.
